The Illusion of Dominance and the Awakening to Peace The fundamental affliction of this world lies in the restless desire of living beings to assert their dominance, and in the human urge to impose one’s opinions, beliefs, and desires upon others. So long as consciousness remains clouded by ego and illusion, conflict and suffering will persist. Yet if humans were to awaken to the true nature of existence—to the impermanence of this world and to the mystery that lies beyond death—much of human fear, conflict, and division might dissolve of its own accord, giving way to peace, compassion, and mutual understanding.
